Your local locksmith in Lochearnhead

Lochearnhead is a small village at the head of Loch Earn where the roads from Perthshire, Stirlingshire and the west all meet. Stone houses and cottages, a scatter of properties along the loch, and a high proportion of holiday and second homes among them. We carry hardware to suit the range, which matters a great deal out here — a return trip for parts is a serious undertaking.

What to do while you are waiting. We will not pretend a village this far out is five minutes from anywhere, so it is worth saying plainly what is sensible while help is on its way. If you are locked out, do not start on the lock with whatever is in the boot — forcing a cylinder or levering a door usually turns a straightforward opening into a replacement, and it can damage the door as well as the lock. If a key has snapped, leave the piece where it is; trying to hook it out with wire or pliers almost always pushes it further in. If a door will not lock and you have to leave, secure what you can from another door and tell us when you call, so we know it is urgent rather than routine. And if you can send a photograph of the door and the lock, it makes it far more likely the right part is already in the van before we set off.

Holiday homes and properties used seasonally. A great many houses here are lived in for part of the year, and the two things that follow are keys and time. Keys, because sets go out to guests, cleaners and family and nobody keeps a list — a key safe in a sensible position and a cylinder that can be changed quickly deal with most of it. Time, because a problem in an empty house is not noticed for weeks. It is worth having someone look over the doors while you are here rather than discovering something in February from three hundred miles away.

Stone houses and timber doors. Much of the village is on timber front doors, often on locks fitted a very long time ago. Insurers usually expect a five-lever mortice lock meeting BS3621 on a timber door. Upgrading one is routine and does not alter the look of the door, and where the pocket cut for the original lock does not suit a modern one, recutting it to fit is part of the job and we do that ourselves.

Sheds, stores and outbuildings. Out here the outbuildings often hold more value than people realise — tools, machinery, bikes, boat gear. A shed or a store is usually the weakest structure on the plot, and the hasp and padlock it came with are rarely worth much. Decent hardware costs very little by comparison.

Whatever the job in Lochearnhead, you get the same promise: no call-out fee, no fix no fee, and a clear price agreed before any work begins.
