A lock that has started to feel like hard work is telling you something, and it is cheaper to listen early. A key that needs jiggling. A handle that has lost its spring. A door that has to be lifted or leaned on before it will lock. All three are signs of wear or misalignment rather than a failed lock, and all three are far cheaper to deal with while the door still works than after the mechanism jams with you on the wrong side of it.

What we will not do is replace a working lock because replacing is quicker than adjusting.

• When replacing really is the answer

Sometimes it is: a cylinder that has been snapped or drilled, a mortice lock worn past adjustment, a multipoint gearbox that has failed, or a lock that does not meet what your insurer asks for. Some older locks are obsolete and the parts are no longer made. Where a like-for-like replacement is not available, we will explain the options and the difference in cost so you can make an informed decision.

On a multipoint door, a photograph of the strip down the edge will usually tell us the make of the gearbox — but not the size. That can only be established with the gearbox out of the door and measured. It is why we carry a large stock of the common ones in a range of sizes, so most jobs finish on the first visit rather than becoming a wait for parts.

• What “insurance approved” actually means

This phrase gets used loosely and it costs people money. For a timber door, insurers almost always mean a five-lever mortice deadlock tested to BS3621, and the lock itself carries a kitemark you can see on the faceplate with the door open. For a uPVC or composite door they usually mean the cylinder rather than the door, and the standards that matter are the anti-snap ones. A lock that is merely five-lever, or a cylinder that is merely new, is not the same thing. The upgrades worth knowing about:

  • Anti-drill locks

Of those three, snapping is the one that matters most on a euro cylinder, because it needs no skill and takes seconds. Meeting your policy’s condition matters for what happens at the point of a claim rather than for what happens to your premium — if the policy names a standard and the lock on the door does not meet it, that is a conversation nobody wants to be having after a break-in.
