Your local locksmith in Bridge of Allan

Bridge of Allan is a Victorian spa town and it still looks the part — broad streets of sandstone villas and terraces, most of them with their original door openings. What has changed is who lives in them. With the university on the doorstep a large share of the town is let, and a good deal of it changes hands every summer. Old doors and frequent tenancy changes make for a particular set of jobs.

Victorian doors and Victorian locks. Tall timber front doors, often original, and behind a fair number of them a mortice lock that has been there a very long time. Insurers usually expect a five-lever mortice lock meeting BS3621 on a timber door, and an old two- or three-lever lock will not meet it. A BS3621 lock carries a kitemark stamped on the faceplate; if there is no kitemark, it does not qualify.

Changing locks between tenancies. Where a property is let, the honest position is that you never really know how many keys exist. Changing the cylinder or the mortice lock between tenancies is quick, inexpensive, and the only way to be sure. Doors can also be keyed alike so a landlord or agent carries one key rather than a bunch.

Flats above the shops, and shared stairs. There is a good deal of subdivided property here, and communal stair doors come with it. We work on the locks fitted to those doors. We do not work on door entry or intercom systems — the handset, the buzzer and the wiring are a different trade, and we will say so rather than take the work on.

Doors that have dropped. The newer housing around the edges is on uPVC and composite doors with multipoint locks, and the usual call is a door that has to be lifted before the key will turn. That is the door rather than the lock. Caught early it is an adjustment; left alone it becomes a failed gearbox.

Windows, and the way older houses are entered. Big sash and case windows are part of the character here and part of the risk, particularly on ground and garden levels. Window locks are inexpensive and we fit them. A survey is free and there is no obligation at the end of it.

Whatever the job in Bridge of Allan, you get the same promise: no call-out fee, no fix no fee, and a clear price agreed before any work begins.
