Your local locksmith in Doune

Doune is a conservation village and it is treated as one — stone frontages along the main street, a castle that brings visitors all year, and farms and steadings spread out around it. Most of the housing is traditional, a fair amount of it is let to visitors, and the doors are older than in most places we cover. That combination decides the work.

Traditional timber doors. The older village is stone with timber front doors, and insurers usually expect a five-lever mortice lock meeting BS3621 on a timber door. A good number here are still on two- or three-lever locks that would not meet that standard. A BS3621 lock carries a kitemark stamped on the faceplate, the metal strip on the edge of the door; no kitemark means it does not qualify.

Doors that stick, and doors that are failing. Timber swells after a wet winter and a door that has worked for years can start to bind. That gets blamed on the lock when the lock is sound, and replacing a good lock will not fix a swollen door. It is worth having somebody tell you which of the two it is before anything is changed.

Visitors and holiday lets. The castle and the distillery bring people through, and there is more short-term letting here than the size of the village suggests. The recurring problem is key control between guests — keys that do not come back and no record of who holds what. A cylinder that can be changed quickly deals with most of it, a key safe with the rest, and doors can be keyed alike so a changeover means one key rather than four. There are also lock and fire-escape rules and a licence from Stirling Council if you let short-term.

Steadings and outbuildings. Around the village there are farms, converted steadings and stables, and the outbuildings hold more value than people credit — tools, machinery, tack, bikes. They are nearly always the weakest structure on the plot and the hardware that came with them is rarely worth much.

Working on a conservation frontage. Where a door is part of what makes the street look the way it does, the aim is a lock that meets the standard without changing the look of the door. That is usually possible. Where it is not, we will say so and explain the options rather than fit something that spoils it.

Whatever the job in Doune, you get the same promise: no call-out fee, no fix no fee, and a clear price agreed before any work begins.
