Your local locksmith in Tillicoultry
Tillicoultry is another of the Hillfoots mill towns, with stone terraces through the middle, ex-council streets behind, and newer housing towards the edges. We carry hardware to suit the range, so most jobs are finished in one visit rather than becoming a return trip for parts.
Doors and locks fitted badly. A fair share of the work we do here is putting right somebody else’s. It is worth saying plainly what that usually looks like, because most people have no way of telling a good fit from a poor one. Screws that are too short, so a strike plate is held by the frame lining rather than the timber behind it. Packers left out when a door was hung, so it has been dropping since the day it went in. A cylinder that projects well beyond the handle plate rather than sitting flush, which is a known weakness and an easy fix. A lock that works but has to be forced, because it was never lined up properly and the door has been fighting it ever since. None of this is expensive to correct. All of it shortens the life of everything around it, and most of it was invisible at the time.
Stone terraces and timber doors. Insurers usually expect a five-lever mortice lock meeting BS3621 on a timber front door, and a good number of these houses are still on older two- or three-lever locks that would not meet that standard. Upgrading one is routine and does not change how the door looks.
The later streets. Mostly uPVC and composite on multipoint locks of every make and age. When a gearbox needs replacing, the make can often be identified from a photograph but the size cannot: it has to come out of the door and be measured, which is why we carry a large stock of the common ones in a range of sizes.
Doors that have started to stick. The most common call across Tillicoultry is a door that has to be lifted or leaned on before the key will turn — usually the door dropping rather than the lock failing, and far cheaper to correct before the gearbox goes.
Whatever the job in Tillicoultry, you get the same promise: no call-out fee, no fix no fee, and a clear price agreed before any work begins.

Mostly by how it behaves. A well-fitted lock turns without being forced, the door closes without being pushed, and the handle springs back cleanly. If you have to lift, shove or wiggle anything, something is not lined up. It is also worth looking at whether the cylinder sits roughly flush with the handle plate rather than projecting well beyond it.
Usually because something around the lock was not right. Short screws in a strike plate, packers left out when the door was hung, or a lock that was never lined up will all shorten the life of a perfectly good mechanism. Fixing the cause is normally cheap. Replacing the lock and leaving the cause is how it happens twice.
Almost always worth correcting. It is rare for the door itself to be the problem, and it is by far the most expensive thing to change. We would rather adjust what is there and tell you honestly if it genuinely needs more.
