Your local locksmith in Dollar
Dollar is the most easterly of the Hillfoots towns and much the most substantial. Large period villas around the Academy and up towards the Burn, traditional terraces through the middle, and newer housing on the edges. We carry hardware to suit the range, so most jobs are finished in one visit rather than becoming a return trip for parts.
Being able to get out. Almost everything written about locks is about keeping people out. This is the other half of it and it matters more. A mortice deadlock needs a key from both sides, so if the door is deadlocked and the key is not where you can find it, nobody inside can get out of that door — and in a house fire, in the dark, with smoke, that is a serious problem. The traditional answer of leaving the key in the lock creates a different risk, and hiding it somewhere clever means nobody can find it in a hurry. There are better options. A thumb-turn cylinder lets a door be locked securely from outside but opened from inside without a key. A key kept on a hook in a fixed place, known to everyone in the house, is the low-tech version and works if everybody genuinely knows. In a large house on several floors, with children or older relatives, this is worth ten minutes of thought.
Period villas. The big houses here are mostly on their original timber doors, which are generally better made than anything that would replace them. Insurers usually expect a five-lever mortice lock meeting BS3621 on a timber door, and a good number are still on older locks. Bringing one up to standard does not alter the door, and where the pocket cut for the original lock does not suit a modern one, recutting it to fit is part of the job and we do it ourselves.
More doors than you think. A large house rarely has one way in. Front, back, garden door, French doors, garage, sometimes a cellar. A house is only as secure as its weakest door and that is almost never the front, so it is worth walking round and counting them, and knowing what is fitted to each one.
Doors that have started to stick. On the newer housing the most common call is a door that has to be lifted or leaned on before the key will turn — usually the door dropping rather than the lock failing, and far cheaper to correct before the gearbox goes.
Whatever the job in Dollar, you get the same promise: no call-out fee, no fix no fee, and a clear price agreed before any work begins.

It is a trade-off and worth thinking about rather than defaulting. A deadlocked door with no key to hand cannot be opened from inside, which matters in a fire. Leaving the key in the lock solves that and creates a different risk. A thumb-turn cylinder gives you both — locked from outside, openable from inside without a key — and is usually the sensible answer for a family house.
It is a cylinder with a turn on the inside instead of a keyhole, so the door locks securely from outside but anyone inside can open it without hunting for a key. It is worth considering on a house with children, older relatives, or several floors. It is not right for every door, and we will tell you where it is not.
More than most people do. A large house often has five or six ways in. A house is only as secure as its weakest door, and that is almost never the front one.
