Great service from Colin and I would highly recommend. Quick response also which was excellent. Good quality, reliable workmanship and very easy to contact which isn’t always the case but Colin is highly responsive. Ten out of ten.

Colin, was very efficient with his work, showed up on time and carried out the work to a high standard, he was transparent with details on the locks and answered any questions we had. He was very professional and friendly.

Your local locksmith in Alva

Alva sits directly beneath the Ochils, and it is a mill town before it is anything else. Rows of stone workers’ terraces through the middle, later council building behind them, and newer housing on the edges. We carry hardware to suit the range, so most jobs are finished in one visit rather than becoming a return trip for parts.

Doors that are not a standard size. This is the thing about the Hillfoots terraces that catches people out, and it is worth knowing before you order anything. Nineteenth-century mill housing was built to the measurements of its day, not to any modern standard. Door openings are frequently narrower and shorter than a current door, the timber is often thicker, and the lock case cut into the stile is rarely the size a modern lock expects. What that means in practice is that an off-the-shelf replacement will not simply drop in, and anybody who tells you it will has not measured. It does not mean the door has to go — these doors are usually better made than anything that would replace them. It means the lock needs to suit the door rather than the other way round, and where the pocket has to be recut to take a modern lock, that is part of the job and we do it ourselves.

Stone and timber. Insurers usually expect a five-lever mortice lock meeting BS3621 on a timber front door, and a good number of these houses are still on locks fitted long before that standard existed. Bringing one up to standard does not alter the door — the lock sits inside it, and from the street nothing changes.

The later housing. Behind and above the old terraces the doors are mostly uPVC and composite on multipoint locks. The most common call is a door that has to be lifted or leaned on before the key will turn — usually the door dropping rather than the lock failing, and far cheaper to correct before the gearbox goes.

Weather off the hills. Sitting under the Ochils means Alva gets more than its share of driving rain, and doors that face it take a beating. Timber swells, and a door that closed perfectly in summer can bind by midwinter. That feels like a lock fault and it is not one — it is worth having someone tell you which it actually is before anything is replaced.

Whatever the job in Alva, you get the same promise: no call-out fee, no fix no fee, and a clear price agreed before any work begins.
