Your local locksmith in Kinross
Kinross sits on the shore of Loch Leven with the M90 running past it, which makes it a comfortable base for people working in Edinburgh, Perth or Dunfermline. The housing is a mix of older stone property around the High Street, established streets behind it, and a good deal of newer building on the edges. We carry hardware to suit the range, so most jobs are finished in one visit rather than becoming a return trip for parts.
Before you call us: three things worth checking. We would rather tell you how to avoid a call-out than take one you did not need. First, if the key turns but the door will not open, or you have to lift the handle hard, look at the door rather than the lock — that is almost always alignment, and it is a different job from a lock failure. Second, if the handle has gone loose, check the two screws through the handle plate before assuming the worst; they work loose with use and sometimes that is genuinely all it is. Third, if the key is stiff, be careful what you put in the lock. General-purpose spray oil is the usual instinct and it is the wrong one — it attracts dust and gums a cylinder up over a few months. A proper lock lubricant, graphite or PTFE based, is what the mechanism actually wants. If none of that helps, then it is worth a call.
When it is worth calling sooner rather than later. The opposite also applies. A key that has started to need jiggling, a handle that has lost its spring, or a door that has to be shouldered to lock are all telling you something is on its way out, and all three are much cheaper to deal with while the door still works than after it stops. Being locked in is the outcome people never expect until it happens.
Older stone property. Around the High Street and the older streets there is a good deal of property still on timber front doors. Insurers usually expect a five-lever mortice lock meeting BS3621 on a timber door, and plenty of these houses are on older two- or three-lever locks that would not meet that standard. Upgrading one is routine and does not change how the door looks.
The newer housing. On the edges of the town the doors are mostly uPVC and composite on multipoint locks. The most common call is a door that has to be lifted or leaned on before the key will turn. When a gearbox does need replacing, the make can often be identified from a photograph but the size cannot: it has to come out of the door and be measured, which is why we carry a large stock of the common ones in a range of sizes.
Whatever the job in Kinross, you get the same promise: no call-out fee, no fix no fee, and a clear price agreed before any work begins.

Locksmith in Kinross: common questions
Yes. Kinross, Milnathort and the villages around Loch Leven are all part of our regular coverage, and being just off the M90 makes them straightforward to get to.
Yes, and we would rather you did. If you have to lift the handle hard, look at the door rather than the lock — that is usually alignment. If the handle has gone loose, check the two screws through the handle plate first, because sometimes that really is all it is. And if the key is stiff, avoid general-purpose spray oil: it attracts dust and gums up a cylinder over a few months. A graphite or PTFE-based lock lubricant is what the mechanism actually wants.
Because it works for a fortnight and causes a problem for years. General-purpose oil attracts dust and grit, and inside a cylinder that turns into a paste that makes the key stiffer than it was in the first place. A proper lock lubricant, graphite or PTFE based, does the job without the side effect and costs very little.
It can, but it is cheaper if it does not. A key that needs jiggling, a handle that has lost its spring or a door that has to be shouldered to lock are all signs of something on its way out. Dealt with while the door still works, these are small jobs. Left until the mechanism fails, they are bigger ones — and can leave you locked in as easily as locked out.
