Crieff grew as a Victorian spa town and it still looks like one. Sash and case windows. The Victorian villas here almost all have them, and they are the part of the house nobody thinks about until an insurer asks. A traditional sash window has no lock at all — it has a centre catch, which holds the two sashes together and is not the same thing. Insurers that specify window locks generally mean a key-operated fastening on windows that can be reached from outside, and a centre catch will not satisfy that. The good news is that sash windows can be fitted with proper locks and with restrictors that let the window open a few inches for air without opening fully, and none of it spoils the look of the window. It is a small job and it is exactly the sort of thing people find out about at the wrong moment.

Stone houses and timber doors. Much of Crieff is on timber front doors, often on locks fitted a very long time ago. Insurers usually expect a five-lever mortice lock meeting BS3621 on a timber door, and plenty of these houses are still on older two- or three-lever locks that would not meet that standard. Upgrading one does not alter the door — the lock sits inside it, and from the street nothing changes. Where the pocket cut for the original lock does not suit a modern one, recutting it to fit is part of the job and we do that ourselves.

Out into Strathearn. Beyond the town there are cottages, steadings and farm properties where the outbuildings often hold more value than people realise. A shed or a store is usually the weakest structure on the plot, and the hasp and padlock it came with are rarely worth much. Decent hardware costs very little by comparison.

The newer housing. On the edges of the town the doors are mostly uPVC and composite on multipoint locks. The most common call is a door that has to be lifted or leaned on before the key will turn — usually the door dropping rather than the lock failing, and far cheaper to correct before the gearbox goes. When a gearbox does need replacing, the make can often be identified from a photograph but the size cannot: it has to come out of the door and be measured, which is why we carry a large stock of the common ones.
