Rosyth is a purpose-built town. The naval dockyard opened in March 1916 and the garden city was laid out to house the people who worked in it, with the first house occupied in May of that year. More than a century on, a great deal of that original housing is still lived in, alongside later council building and newer estates. We carry hardware to suit the whole span, so most jobs are finished in one visit rather than becoming a return trip for parts.

Doors that were never meant to last a century. The garden city streets are the distinctive thing about Rosyth and they bring their own quirks. A door and frame from 1916 has usually moved, been painted a dozen times and been adapted by several owners, and the mortice pocket cut for the original lock is rarely the size anything modern expects. That does not mean the door needs replacing — far from it, these are generally better made than what would replace them — but it does mean the pocket usually has to be recut or enlarged to take a modern lock. That is part of the job and we do it ourselves. What matters is taking the time to do it properly, so the lock sits square and the door still closes as it should, rather than forcing something into a space that was never meant for it.

Timber doors and what insurers expect. Insurers usually expect a five-lever mortice lock meeting BS3621 on a timber front door, and a good number of the older properties here are still on two- or three-lever locks fitted long before that standard existed. Upgrading one is routine and it does not change the appearance of the door from the street.

The later estates. The council building of the middle of the century and the newer housing since are almost all on replaced doors now, fitted at different times by different people, so what we find is uPVC and composite on multipoint locks of every make and age. When a gearbox needs replacing, the make can often be identified from a photograph but the size cannot: it has to come out of the door and be measured, which is why we carry a large stock of the common ones in a range of sizes.

Doors that have started to stick. The most common call across Rosyth is a door that has to be lifted or leaned on before the key will turn — usually the door dropping rather than the lock failing, and far cheaper to correct before the gearbox goes.
