Your local locksmith in Bathgate
Bathgate has changed more than most towns we cover. Since the Airdrie to Bathgate line reopened in 2010 it has had direct trains to both Glasgow and Edinburgh, and it has grown accordingly — a compact older centre with a great deal of modern housing wrapped around it at Wester Inch, Boghall and beyond. That gives us two quite different kinds of door to deal with, and we carry hardware for both, so most jobs are finished in one visit rather than becoming a return trip for parts.
The older town. Around George Place, the Steelyard and the older streets there is stone property still on timber front doors. Insurers usually expect a five-lever mortice lock meeting BS3621 on a timber door, and a good number of these houses are still on older two- or three-lever locks that would not meet that standard. It is a straightforward upgrade and it does not mean altering the character of the door.
Wester Inch and the newer estates. The eastern side of Bathgate is largely modern, and there is more to come — Persimmon has brought forward proposals for a neighbourhood centre at Wester Inch with shops alongside a mix of apartments, terraces, townhouses and detached homes. On estates like these two things come up again and again. Builders usually fit a standard euro cylinder, which is not the same thing as an anti-snap one. And most households end up carrying three or four keys for doors that could all be keyed alike.
Garages, and the door between the garage and the house. This one is worth a paragraph of its own because it is so widely overlooked. A lot of Bathgate’s newer housing has an integral garage with a connecting door into the hall or the kitchen. That door is very often a lightweight internal one with a simple latch — but in security terms it is an external door, because the garage itself is the outer skin and it is usually the weaker of the two. Treating it as an external door, with a proper lock on it, closes a gap that most people have never thought about. The same goes for the up-and-over door itself, which on many houses has only the handle it came with.
Moving in and moving on. A commuter town has a lot of coming and going, and when you take on a house you have no realistic way of knowing how many keys exist — previous owners, previous tenants, an agent, a neighbour who was feeding the cat. Changing the cylinder on the day you move in is one of the cheapest pieces of peace of mind available, and it is the cylinder rather than the whole lock, so it is a smaller job than people expect.
Doors that have started to stick. The most common call across Bathgate is a door that has to be lifted or leaned on before the key will turn — usually the door dropping rather than the lock failing, and far cheaper to correct before the gearbox goes. When a gearbox does need replacing, the make can often be identified from a photograph but the size cannot: it has to come out of the door and be measured, which is why we carry a large stock of the common ones in a range of sizes.
Whatever the job in Bathgate, you get the same promise: no call-out fee, no fix no fee, and a clear price agreed before any work begins.

Locksmith in Bathgate: common questions
Yes, builders often fit standard cylinders vulnerable to snapping. Upgrading to anti-snap hardware is a low-cost, worthwhile improvement for new Bathgate homes.
Usually, yes, and it is one of the most overlooked doors in a modern house. Builders often fit a lightweight internal door with a simple latch between the garage and the hall, but in security terms it is an external door — the garage is the outer skin and it is normally the weaker of the two. Putting a proper lock on it closes a gap most people have never considered, and it is an inexpensive job.
Yes. A lot of garage doors are still on nothing more than the handle they came with, which is not much of a lock. There are straightforward ways to improve that without replacing the door, and it is worth doing if the garage holds bikes, tools or anything else worth taking.
Two things, and both cost less now than later. Builders usually fit a standard euro cylinder, which is not the same as an anti-snap one, so that is the upgrade worth making. And a new house typically arrives with front, back and garage doors on different keys, when they could be keyed alike so you carry one.
