Locking Products
There are numerous types of locks available for new installations, here we explain the most common lock types used in residential properties.
Euro Cylinders
A Euro Cylinder is a standardised, popular lock barrel, often used in uPVC, composite, and wooden doors, known for its easy replacement and operation via an internal cam, featuring a cylindrical shape with a keyway for pins, allowing for upgrades to higher security features like anti- snap technology.
All Euro Cylinders supplied and fitted by Scotia Locksmiths are anti-snap and are certified to EN1303 meaning they are also drill, pick and pull resistant.
These locks can also be supplied with a thumb turn on the inside of the door enabling easy escape from the property in the event of a fire or other emergency.
Multi-Point Locks
A multi-point lock is a high-security door locking system that secures a door at three or more points (top, middle, bottom) with hooks, bolts, or rollers, operated by a single handle and key turn, providing superior security and a tighter weather seal compared to traditional single locks, commonly found on uPVC and composite doors. It distributes pressure evenly, preventing warping and drafts.
In most cases, when the central locking mechanism fails, these can be replaced without the need to buy a complete new unit.
Mortice Locks
A mortice lock is a type of lock set installed within a deep pocket (mortice) cut into the edge of a door, rather than being surface-mounted, providing greater security and a sleek finish, commonly used on wooden doors and often featuring a deadbolt and/or latch operated by a key and handles, with types like deadlocks and sashlocks available.
The lock's body is housed inside a precisely cut rectangular hole (the mortice) in the door's edge, making it strong and hard to force open. Considered highly secure, often used for insurance compliance, especially on exterior doors, and can withstand heavy use. Once installed, only the forend (plate) and the keyhole/handle are visible, offering a clean look.
Types: Deadlock: Key-operated only, throwing a deadbolt for strong security. Sashlock: Combines a key-operated deadbolt with a spring-loaded latch, operated by handles.
All Union 3 lever or 5 lever mortice locks and sash locks supplied and fitted by Scotia Locksmiths come with a 10-year guarantee. These locks are protected from attack with anti-pick, anti-saw and anti-drill security features. These locks comply with BS EN 3621, BS EN 1634, and BS EN 12209. These locks are also fire-tested and are Certifire and Secured by Design approved.
Night Latches
A night latch, often called a Yale Lock, is a surface-mounted door lock that secures a door from the inside with a knob or lever and from the outside with a key, automatically latching when the door closes for easy, instant security, ideal as a secondary lock with deadbolts for enhanced home protection. They offer keyless emergency exit and come in deadlocking (more secure) or non- deadlocking types, but should always be used with another lock such as a Mortice lock for true security, as they can be vulnerable if a glass panel breaks.
These locks come in two sizes (40mm and 60mm) and with both the lock and rim cylinder available in a variety of colours.
Rim Locks
A rim lock is a traditional, surface-mounted door lock that sits on the inside face of a door, rather than being recessed into it (like a mortice lock). It's known for its vintage look, often seen in period homes, and consists of a visible metal box housing a latch and sometimes a deadbolt, operated by door knobs and a key. These locks are valued for their decorative appeal, fitting well with traditional, Victorian, or period styles.
